Hi Jabbar.
Thanks for your voicemail. I'm pasted the information from the letter below. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Many thanks, Brenda
Dear Jabbar,
We are writing to invite your participation as a guest and discussion leader in Simon
Fraser University’s Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue for the fall 2009 course “Art in
Community: Creating Cultures of Ingenuity and Innovation.” Attached (electronic) is
information describing this unusual program, and a tentative outline of the upcoming
semester.
This full-time, one-semester program includes up to 20 of Simon Fraser University’s
brightest third and fourth year students, selected through a rigorous application process
from diverse Departments and Faculties. While their experiences and future interests
vary, they all share high academic standing, unusual motivation and enthusiasm, a keen
interest in engaging public issues, and exceptional communication abilities. I think you
will find your time with the class to be invigorating and worthwhile.
We hope you will join us on Thursday 29 October 2009, 9:30-12:00 with Don
Montgomery (Executive Director, Asian Heritage Month) to discuss the role of art and
culture in diverse communities, and related topics.
We believe our students would benefit significantly from your participation as a guest
and conversationalist. Keep in mind that the course is dialogue-oriented, class time is
interactive rather than lecture-focused, and creative approaches that facilitate active
learning are welcome. We generally steer away from formal presentations, except for a 5-
10 minute introduction about yourself and potential issues you might like to discuss with
the students.
The students will have read relevant material prior to your visit, both for background and
to help stimulate discussion. Any suggestions you might have for readings would be
welcome.
One of us or a student will contact you a week before your session to discuss your
presentation and coordinate any audio-visual requirements. The class will meet at Simon
Fraser University’s Harbour Centre campus (515 W. Hastings St.), room HC 3050.
Please confirm your participation with a phone call or e-mail message to Brenda Tang
(778 782 5075, brendat@sfu.ca), Administrative Coordinator to the Centre for Dialogue.
Your response by 31 July would be greatly appreciated.
Students participating in innovative university programs of this type benefit from a
combination of academic, professional, and personal exchanges that make their learning
opportunity extraordinary. Your involvement in our dialogue will contribute significantly
to achieving this outcome.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas to discuss. We
would greatly appreciate your taking part in this exciting educational endeavour, and look
forward to talking with you further.
Sincerely,
Mark L. Winston, FRSC, Academic Director, Centre for Dialogue
Judith Marcuse, Visiting Faculty
Andrea Rose, Visiting Faculty
